Jane O’Young is a university student and aspiring artist. She is one of the main characters of The Staunch Hawthorn and a supporting character in Mary’s Eternal Companion and Writing Her Own Story.
Jane moved into a home with a hawthorn tree in its backyard. However, because her dad suffered from allergies he had it cut down, not realizing that it was home to a fairy called Aislinn. To save her own life, Aislinn bonded with Jane, then later blamed her for destroying her home. Alba intervened to dispel that misunderstanding, and she introduced Jane to the world of magic. Aislinn then demanded that Jane help her find a new home, to which Jane reluctantly agreed.
On the first day of school she met Gina Evelyn and Ainsley Wintertide, and they quickly became friends. When Gina became able to see Aislinn, she learned that all three of them knew about magic. Ainsley told them she’s visiting a relative over winter break. On the day of the visit, Jane, Aislinn, and Gina are suddenly teleported on top of her. After Alba sorted out the resulting chaos, the group, with Nashwa handling logistics, decided to accompany her.
Jane met Edmund Sunscatter and his family, and they toured the city. Then they were attacked, and although Jane borrowed Aislinn’s power to defend themselves, Ainsley ended up being kidnapped. The police arrived, and the group were then interrogated by Ciarán Thunderheart. After picking up on some clues, Jane and Aislinn began to view him with distrust.
Edmund received a ransom note asking him to meet at his workplace where he managed the barrier protecting the city. He asked Aislinn and Nashwa to accompany him, as they were able to defend themselves during an ambush and could help shift the hostage negotiation in their favor. At the barrier security room they all met Ciarán and learned of his plan to destroy the city, and the situation turned sour when he threatened to kill Ainsley. A fight broke out and in the end Ciarán was defeated and Ainsley was freed, but the barrier ended up getting destroyed. The city’s gravity and air pressure destabilized, and Ainsley saved Jane just as she was about to be sucked out of the city.
While Nashwa was trying to hold the barrier together, Jane, Aislinn, and Ainsley tried to fix it. Aislinn planted her remaining hawthorn seed in the mana transfer point and it quickly grew into a tree that generated its own barrier. The city was saved, but Aislinn didn’t emerge from the tree. Despite wanting Aislinn out of her life, Jane cried and waited for her return, but after some time became depressed and ended up returning home without her.
Some time later, Gina and Ainsley visited her to cheer her up. Then they noticed the former hawthorn tree regrowing, and Aislinn appeared to reunite with Jane.
Jane was introduced to Ainsley’s old friend Mary Demore and was explained her succubus heritage and dehabilitating hunger pangs and aversion to feeding. Eager to help, Gina made a wish to cure Mary, but Nashwa twisted the wish to instead temporarily transfer her succubus nature to Gina instead. Experiencing the effects of hunger herself, Gina succumbed and kissed Jane, unconsciously cursing her to see Gina in her dreams until she admitted her feelings. Nashwa secretly copied the effects and applied them to Gina as well.
As the curse took effect, Jane became more conscious of Gina and started to avoid her. Due to her distress over her dreams, her mana recovery suffered, causing Aislinn to worry. Unable to get information from the embarrassed Jane, Aislinn asked Ainsley and Mary for help.
Ainsley invited everyone to her apartment where Mary explained how to remove the succubus curse. With Nashwa’s help, Jane and Gina admitted their feelings for each other, removing the curse.
After applying to universities, Jane learned that she was accepted to a prestigious university, and accompanying the acceptance letter was an invite from from Gertrude Rosenfeld. When she learned that Gina received the same letter, they both decided to meet her.
Gertrude asked for their supernatural help in resolving an issue, in return for fully paying their tuition. While Jane declined, Gina needed the money so she accepted. After Gertrude and Gina talked about the details in private, the former arranged for the women to be located in a luxurious penthouse near campus. In the middle of touring their new place, Jane was surprised to learn that a new person, Sally, would also be staying with them.
Jane attended orientation and started getting accustomed to university life. One day, she met with Gina in a crowded cafeteria. Hearing Gina’s wish to eat alone with Jane, Nashwa caused everyone to vacate the building. They enjoyed their lunch together, but then they were interrupted by Sally, disguised as Char Fairfield, who took Gina away to investigate something nearby.
Later, Jane received an invitation to attend a frat party. She initially rejected, but after Aislinn and Sally agreed to go, she gave into peer pressure. On the evening of the party, everyone went their separate ways, leaving Jane standing uncomfortably in a corner. Aislinn returned from the kitchen drunk and entered her, unconsciously causing her to transform. With Gina’s help, she was escorted out and hidden with Char’s invisibility barrier to complete her transformation.
After returning to the penthouse, they were ambushed by demons. Distraught by the turn of events, Jane told Gina how her activities made her feel uncomfortable. Gina consoled her, then made a wish to let her know whenever she was in trouble. Nashwa created a pair of pendants that pointed in each others’ direction whenever the wearer was in trouble. Hearing about the incident, Gertrude arranged to have Gina move to Ylatt Tower, fortify the penthouse with enchantments, and protect Jane with bodyguards.
Though they kept communicating via texts, Jane spent the time away from Gina feeling a bit anxious, making her long to see her again. Then her pendant started glowing. Understanding that Gina was in danger, she rushed to help her, managing to get Aislinn’s help to neutralize a crazed Gertrude just in time.
Jane wants to become an illustrator, so she draws frequently. Her art has earned her a modest following on social media. Conveying her imagination from her mind to reality makes her happy. She likes strawberries, bubble tea, and Chinese food.
Jane’s greatest source of strength is her work ethic. She doesn’t want to be perceived as incompetent or sloppy, so she works very hard at drawing, studying, and everything else she does. Unfortunately she does this to a fault and sometimes works to the point of exhaustion.
While Jane is not a magician, thanks to her bond with Aislinn she has developed some magical abilities of her own.
