Sally is a magician and Char Fairfield’s true form.
History
Sally is a 12-year-old novice witch who lives with her grandfather in New Salem. Perhaps because of the shock of her parents suddenly disappearing one day, she is currently being home-schooled and is a bit of a recluse during the day, so people around her are worried about her.
…But that is just a front. In reality, despite her young age she is a very accomplished magician and researcher. From a report on a certain potion left by her parents, she invented what she calls her own “rapid growth pill” which she uses to work as “Char Fairfield,” an ace patrol officer in the New Salem Police. With the help of her grandfather, a former magical tool craftsman, she works under a fake name, body, and identity because she deep down she knew that her parents had been harmed by villains who claimed to be cops. She endeavors day and night to investigate the organization from the inside, locate her parents, and expose the dark side of the law.
Writing Her Own Story
After the events of The Staunch Hawthorn, Sally withdrew from the public eye, satisfied that justice had been served. A couple of years passed, and she came across an ad recruiting investigators. Eager for something new, she answered the call and moved with her parents to Ylatt Tower where she met Gertrude Rosenfeld, and eventually Gina Evelyn and Nashwa who would assist her. At Gertrude’s behest, Gina, her girlfriend Jane O’Young, and Sally were located in a luxurious penthouse near the local university campus.
As Char, she used her magic and combat experience to protect Gina as she investigated incidents, like the attacks on restaurant and university staff. When Gina gained the ability to use magic, she was responsible for teaching her the basics of casting spells, flying with broomsticks, and magical defense.
Outside of her investigation, she took the opportunity to experience university life. While she enjoyed auditing various classes and watching students engage in club activities, she disliked rowdy frat parties and vowed never to attend one ever again.
Personality and traits
Sally is a precocious, calm, and logical thinker, and at the same time, she is a kind girl with a strong sense of justice. In addition to being flexible enough to follow not only the right way but also the wrong way to achieve her goals, she is also more diligent than most people. These characteristics can be seen from how she can infiltrate the New Salem police and operate under the guise of Char.
Yet she can be a bit shy around strangers, and conversely she is lonely and demands attention from her closest friends. In fact, she has many traits that make her more childlike than her actual age, such as her love of heroic stories and cute things, her hobby of knitting stuffed animals of them, and her fondness of sweet treats.
Her gender is often mistaken because of her somewhat childlike yet androgynous behavior, and her clothes and her hairstyle give her a boyish appearance. She has a deep mistrust of adults because of a malicious incident that befelled her parents. Because of this, she has a clearly bad habit to keep things to herself and the tendency to dislike compromise and unpreparedness. But at the same time, she has an excellent ability to make snap judgments and is exceptionally courageous. These qualities can be seen from when Sally comes across an event, she transforms into Char to deal with it without any hesitation.
Magical abilities and skills
Although still young, Sally is an excellent wizard, possessing more mana than most adults. Furthermore, she has a natural talent for creating potions and making advancements in magic due to her parents’ background as researchers. However, she is not all powerful: she can neither use lightning magic at a rudimentary level due to past trauma nor use her magic to its fullest extent because her body is not yet mature enough.
- Ice Magic: Sally’s signature magic type, it is quite effective in its adaptability, from firing ice bullets during combat to keeping lemonade tasty at all times.
- Rapid Growth (Char): Sally is temporarily transformed from Sally into Char, her adult form, by taking a rapid growth pill that she developed on her own based on a report left by her parents. By becoming Char, not only are her physical abilities enhanced, but her amount of mana and magical output are also improved, transforming her into an extremely powerful wizard.
- Invisibility Barrier: Sally’s independently developed boundary magic, which allows the magician to hide inside the barrier, evading outside physical and magical perception. There is nearly no time limit, but it has the disadvantage of rapidly deteriorating when magic is used inside. Its use varies, but in Sally’s case, it is mainly used to transform into Char without anyone noticing.
- Flying: Sally can fly with a broom and can make more advanced movements than the average magician.
- Magic (Potion) Development: Sally can create new potions and magic if she has sufficient time and dedicated equipment.
Possessions
- Wand: A slightly higher class yet very common wand, but Sally is very protective of it as it was a gift from her parents on her fifth birthday.
- Rapid Growth Pills: In order to transform from Sally to Char and to maintain Char’s appearance, she carries rapid growth pills with her at all times, just in case. There are two types: red pill A for habitual use and blue pill B which takes quick effect. After red pill A is taken, the transformation completes after about 15 minutes, and after the transformation continues for exactly 8 hours, her body slowly shrinks and returns to normal after a grace period of 10 minutes. On the other hand, when the fast-acting blue pill B is taken, the transformation is completed in less than one minute, but the effect is unstable, lasting only about three hours, with a grace period of about five minutes to release the transformation, and with only about one minute for the body to return to normal.
- Sally’s Room: This is a so-called child’s room. It has a white color scheme and is generally well organized for a child of such a young age. There are bookshelves filled with books that even adults would find difficult to read (plus American comics and manga about heroes), a stand-up sandbag for karate, and a large closet that for some reason contains adult costumes and police uniforms. There are also cute stuffed animals and self-made stuffed animals around the desk and bed, while in one corner of the room there is a mini-fridge for storing juice and potions. And the most notable feature of all is the special portal that has been installed and connects to Char’s apartment.

経歴
サリーは12歳の少女で、ニューセーラムで祖父と二人暮らしをしている未熟な魔法使いです。ある日突然両親が蒸発してしまったショックからか、現在はホームスクーリング中であり外出はあまりせず昼間も引きこもり気味の為、まわりの人たちは彼女のことを心配しています。
……しかしそれは仮の姿。実際の彼女は幼いながらも非常に優れた魔法使い兼研究者です。彼女は両親が遺したとある魔法薬のレポートから、独自で「急成長薬」と呼べるものを発明し、それを服用して魔法警察の実動隊エース「シャール・フェアフィールド」として活動しています。元魔道具職人である祖父の力も借り、名前・身体・身分を全て偽ってまで活動する理由は、実は両親は魔法警察を名乗る悪人によって害を被ったことを密かに知っていた為。組織を内部から調査し、両親の行方と魔法警察の闇を暴こうと日夜奮闘しているのです。
自分の物語を書くこと
『頑固なサンザシ』の事件後、サリーは正義が果たされたことに満足して、表舞台から姿を消した。2年後、彼女は調査員募集の広告を目にする。何か新しいことを熱望し、彼女は応じて、両親と一緒にイラット塔に移動し、そこでガートルード・ローゼンフェルドと出会い、やがてジーナ・エブリンとナシュワが彼女を助けてくれることになる。ガートルードの指示で、ジーナとその恋人ジェーン、そしてサリーは、地元の大学キャンパスの近くにある豪華なペントハウスに住むことになった。
シャールとして、魔法と戦闘の経験を生かし、レストランや大学職員が襲われた事件などの調査をしながらジーナを守っていた。ジーナが魔法を使えるようになると、魔法をかける方法、箒で空を飛ぶ方法、魔法による防御方法など、基本的なことを教える役割を担っていた。
捜査の外では、大学生活を体験する機会を得た。様々な授業を聴講したり、学生がクラブ活動をしているのを見るのは楽しいが、騒がしい学生乱痴気パーティーは嫌いで、二度と参加しないと誓った。
性格・特性
サリーは早熟した冷静沈着で論理的な思考の持ち主であり、同時に基本的に正義感が強くて優しい性格の女の子です。また目的のためなら正道だけでなく邪道も扱える柔軟さをあわせ持ち、勤勉さも人一倍に有しています 。これらの特徴は彼女がシャールという偽りの姿で魔法警察に潜入し活躍できているところからも窺えます。
その一方で、親しくない相手には少し引っ込み思案だったり、逆に親しい人には甘えん坊の寂しがり屋だったりします。ヒーロー物の創作物や可愛いものが好きで、それらの編みぐるみを作るのが趣味ですし、実は甘いお菓子が大好きというように実年齢以上に子供っぽい特徴も多々あります。
やや子供っぽいですが中性的な言動が多く、また着ている服や髪型も男の子みたいな見た目なことが多い為、性別をよく誤認されます。またサリーもこれを訂正しないことがしばしばあるため、彼女が男の子だと思う人は少なくありません。これは大人の女であるシャール・フェアフィールドとの関連性を薄めたいという偽造工作の一環であり、同時にサリー自身が個人の差を重視し性差にはあまり頓着しない性質の持ち主だからです。
彼女は両親に襲い掛かった悪意ある出来事のせいで、大人を心の底では信用していません。それが原因で、物事を一人で抱え込みがちという明確な悪癖を持ち、更には妥協を嫌い、準備不足を嫌う傾向にあります。一方でとっさでの判断力が高く、度胸も人一倍以上にあります。これらの性質はサリーで事件に出くわした際に、何の躊躇もなくシャールに変身して対処しにいくところからも窺えます。
魔法の能力・スキル
サリーはまだ若いながら優れた魔法使いであり、並みの大人を軽くしのぐマナ所有量を持ちます。更に研究者である両親由来で魔法薬や魔法開発には天賦の才があります。ただし万能ではなく、過去のトラウマにより初歩的なレベルで雷魔法を扱えず、また体が成熟していないためか魔法の最高出力・影響範囲はさほどでもないという弱点があります。
- 氷魔法：サリーの得意な属性魔法であり、戦闘用の氷弾を発射する魔法からレモネードをいつでもおいしく飲めるようにする保冷魔法など、中々に小回りが効きます。
- 急成長（シャール）：サリーの両親が遺したレポートを元に彼女が独自で開発した急成長薬を飲むことで、サリーから大人の姿であるシャールへと一時的に変化します。シャールになることで身体能力が向上するのは勿論、マナ所有量・魔法最大出力が跳ね上がり非常に強力な魔法使いへと変貌します。
- 不視結界： サリーが独自開発した結界を張る魔法であり、結界内部に隠れることで外部からの物理的・魔力的な感知をごまかせます。時間制限はほとんどありませんが、内部で魔法を発動すると急速に劣化してしまうという欠点があります。用途は様々ですが、サリーの時は専ら誰にも気づかれずにシャールに変身するときに用いられます。
- 飛行：ほうきで飛行することができ、一般的な魔術師よりも高度な動きが可能です。
- 魔法（薬）開発：サリーは時間と専用の設備が十分あるのならば、新しい魔法薬や魔法を発明できます。
所持品
- 杖：少しだけ高級なごく一般的な杖ですが、５歳の誕生日に両親からプレゼントされたもののためサリーはこれをとても大事にしています。
- 急成長薬：サリーからシャールに変身するため、及びシャールの姿を維持するために必要な急成長薬を万が一に常に備えて幾つか携帯しています。赤色の常用薬Aと青色の即効薬Bの二種類が存在しどちらも錠剤です。常用薬Aでは、服用してから１５分程ゆっくり時間をかけて変身が完了し、ほぼきっかり8時間変身し続けた後、解除猶予10分程を経てゆっくり体が縮み戻ります。一方即効薬B（青色）では、服用してわずか1分未満で変身が完了しますが、効き目が三時間前後かつ変身解除猶予も５分程、おまけに体が戻る時間も１分程と短く不安定です。
- サリーの部屋：いわゆる子供部屋です。白を基調としておりまだ幼い年齢の割に全体的に整理整頓されています。大人でも難しそうな本（+ヒーロー物のアメコミや漫画）がミッチリ詰まった本棚が並び、徒手空拳用の立てて置くタイプのサンドバッグがあり、何故か大人用の衣装や警察服も入った大きなクローゼットがあります。また机やベット周りにはかわいらしいぬいぐるみや自作の編みぐるみがある一方、部屋の片隅にはジュースや薬を保管するミニ冷蔵庫があります。そして一番の特徴が、特殊なポータルが設置されており、シャールのアパートとつながっています。
