Graham Wintertide is a magician who serves the New Salem military. As part of his work, he responds to disasters and aids guardians in trouble. This gives him the unique opportunity to travel between New Salem and Earth. During one of his deployments he met his wife Fia.
Graham learned that he will be stationed at Onyx Cliff to help the guardian, Kurtis Yates. He relayed the news to his wife Fia, and they discussed the effects of frequent travel on their daughter, Ainsley. They agreed that having a stable place to live was important, but on the other hand, being able to travel is a chance that not many people can have. Graham knew he had to move frequently, but Fia proposed moving with him to better support their child. They both decided to move to Earth together.
After their relocation, he asked Ainsley how she was doing with school, and was pleased to learn that she was keeping up with her peers. He told her stories about his job, his past work, and all the people he met. He wanted Ainsley to experience the simple joys of human culture, so he took her to various places, such as fast food restaurants and shopping malls.
When he finished helping Kurtis, his superiors called him back to be restationed in New Salem. He noticed that Ainsley was getting depressed because she felt like she didn’t fit in with her classmates, so he and Fia reassured her that they would always love her, and that it may take time to connect with the right people.
A couple of years passed, and Graham was relocated to Oak Shade. He was glad to see that Ainsley was making friends at school, but wished that he could be with his family more often during this deployment. While he was away, Fia called to tell him how Ainsley gradually became more and more depressed. When he finally returned, he was stunned to see his daughter become so depressed that she refused to leave her room. They expressed their love for Ainsley, and patiently listened to her troubles. Then one day, Ainsley’s classmate, Mary Demore, visited with snacks, concerned about her being absent from school. With her help, Ainsley left her room on her own and slowly regained her self-esteem.
Ainsley graduated from 7th grade, and the family moved back to New Salem. When he learned that Ainsley was in the top of her class he became very proud.
Coming from a military family, Graham believes in a life of service. As expected of someone employed by the army, he is disciplined and physically fit. When off-duty, he likes to chat with his coworkers and tell stories. His daughter Ainsley especially loves to hear his tales of his deployments to various places on Earth.
